ayley was such a fucking breath of fresh air among all the snobs here. I didn’t even care that elemental magic had become remedial elemental magic. I loved tutoring her. Her face would light up when she would master something. We were three months into the semester, and we’d only been rained on a few times. She was getting close to being able to change the weather. Between her mother and I helping her, she’d have it in no time.

Kirnon and I were both desperately in love with her. We didn’t know how she felt. We all flirted, but she flirted with both of us, and that Hellcat had joined us at meals. He’d actually been friendly to us. I knew Hayley said she was getting rid of him when she graduated, but she seemed to be warming to him. She wasn’t flirting with him like she was us, but she wasn’t scowling at him and demanding he leave anymore.

Kirnon and I talked about her all the time. All was fair in love and war. I talked about my tutoring session with her, and he talked about his. I knew she was having issues with her telepathy. Now that she was more comfortable here, she was hearing everyone and not who she wanted to. She wanted to focus and spy on people, but none of us knew why.

We were all in the same dorm and were sitting alone in the common room. Hayley and Keane were both pacing. They seemed more agitated than usual.

“What’s wrong, love?” I asked. “Something is going on.”

Keane finally stopped pacing and glared at me. For a minute, I thought he was going to rip out my throat. I didn’t like that she had secrets with him she didn’t have with me.

“You can trust both of them. I can smell it. We need to tell them so they can help. Azriel might know some spells and Kirnon can’t help you with telepathy unless he knows what you are trying to do and why.”

“Can we trust them with everything?” she asked.

“Not just yet. I need to spend more time with them.”

They knew who her father was. That’s what the big secret was. If she didn’t want to tell me yet, I was fine with that. Kirnon just shrugged. He was fine with that too. We could wait until she was ready to tell us—until she felt safe enough to trust us with that secret.

I got up and hugged Hayley. She felt so good in my arms. Keane scowled at me. “If your secret is what I think it is, you don’t have to tell us until you’re ready. Kirnon feels the same.”

Keane just gave me a curt nod. “There are two gangs of Hellhounds that are unusually interested in who her father is. We can’t figure out why. One of them got close to Hayley in high school, and the other just acts oddly around her. We need to know what they are up to. Your
